New England Law School

New England Law School in Boston was originally founded as a women's law school and is located in the city's theater district; it is ranked in the fourth tier by U.S. News and World Report.

New England Law has a relatively high acceptance rate that hovers around 50% and has specializations in environmental law, international law, and tax law.

New England Law's three-year Juris Doctor (J.D.) program operates from mid-August to mid-May; there is also a part-time program. Housing information for in and around Boston is available on the school's website.

Applicants may apply online through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) or print and mail the LSAC application to the school.

In addition to the application, applicants must submit:

  • LSDAS report, including LSAT score
  • Undergraduate transcript
  • Personal statement
  • Two letters of recommendation

Transfer Procedures

In addition to the application and fee, transfer students to New England must provide the following by July 1 for Fall transfer and November 1 for Spring transfer:

  • LSDAS report, including LSAT score
  • Official law school transcript
  • Letter of good standing from current dean
  • Personal statement
  • One letter of recommendation from law professor

Degrees and Curriculum

In order to graduate from New England Law, students must complete 86 semester hours of credit; for full requirements, see Graduation Requirements on the school's website.

The first-year curriculum at New England Law includes Contracts, Property, Torts, Constitutional Law, Criminal Law, Civil Procedure, Evidence, Law and Ethics of Lawyering, and two semesters of Legal Research and Writing.

New England Law also offers an LL.M. in Advanced Legal Studies degree program for international students who already hold foreign law degrees; there are no joint-degree programs available.

Study Abroad

New England Law operates several study abroad programs for semesters as well as for summer sessions in places like Ireland, England, Prague, Denmark, and more.

Law Journals and Other Activities

Students have the opportunity to participate in three student journals: New England Law Review, New England Journal on Criminal and Civil Confinement, and New England Journal of International and Comparative Law.

Along with dozens of student organizations, students can also participate in specialized programs and centers, such as the Center for International Law and Policy, Center for Law and Social Responsibility, and Center for Business Law.

Bar Exam Passage Rate

Most New England Law graduates take the Massachusetts Bar Exam; in 2007, they achieved an 80% pass rate while the state average was 86%.

Post-Graduation Employment

Eighty-four percent of the New England Law Class of 2009 was employed or pursuing graduate education within nine months after graduation.

Forty-six percent of graduates went into private practice, 29% entered business/corporations employment, 15% accepted government positions, 7% secured judicial clerkships, 2% entered academia, and 1% went into the public interest field.

The average starting salary for those who work in private practice was $98,412 while the average startings salary for those who accepted public sector positions was $50,616
