The California Innocence Project through San Diego's California Western Law School has helped to free Reggie Cole, who had been convicted of a robbery and murder in 1994.
The students in the project singled out problems with the conviction, and a California judge agreed that Cole's representation had been inadequate in the original trial.
Cole had also been charged with a prison murder in 2000, but was able to show he acted in self-defense and had the charge dropped to manslaughter. The judge ruled that his 16 years in prison was enough as time served on that offense.
