Barack Obama: Another Lawyer as U.S. President

Friday November 7, 2008

Politics and the legal profession have long been closely related, so it's not surprising that so many United States Presidents have also been attorneys. How many is so many?

When Barack Obama is sworn in as the 44th President on January 20, 2009, he will join 25* other lawyers who became leaders of the country; Vice President-Elect Joe Biden, incidentally, is a graduate of the Syracuse University College of Law.

Obama will be the second graduate of Harvard Law School to rise to the highest elected office in the land; the other was Rutherford B. Hayes.

For more information on Harvard Law School, check out our detailed profile here.

*The Wall Street Journal Law Blog counts 24, but ABA information says 25.
