Coping With End of Semester Blues
Monday April 7, 2008
I just read a very helpful post by Amy Jarmon from the Law School Academic Support blog, a member of the Law Professor Blog network. The title "The Elephant in the Room" is taken from the old proverb, to the effect of "You can eat an elephant as long as you take one bite at a time."
This reminded me of Anne Lamott's wonderful advice-for-writers book, Bird by Bird. I always thought her title was some play on the phrase "word by word." When I actually read the book, I was delighted to discover that in fact it was the advice given to Lamott's little brother by their dad, during the brother's science project -- a diorama about the birds of North America, which (in typical elementary school child fashion) he'd left to the last minute. When the enormity of the task overwhelmed him, he asked his dad how on earth he was ever going to finish on time. Dad replied: "Bird by bird."
Finals are closer than they were before spring break. For many of you, graduation is around the corner and if you haven't secured employment yet, it can just compound the incredible stress. Add a good dose of spring fever to the mix and it's easy to see why law students can be overcome by stress and "school fatigue." Ms. Jarmon's advice is right on target, and can help you finish off that "elephant" in no time.
